“Accident method” callers posing as medical staff took €2,800 and 2,000 lei

What happened: Romanian police in Bacău reported that an 80-year-old woman from Bogdăneşti was phoned around 00:30 by people falsely presenting themselves as medical staff. They said her son had suffered an accident and needed money for specialised medical care. Later that day she travelled to Oituz and handed €2,800 and 2,000 lei to an unknown person. Police searched premises, detained three suspects and recovered part of the loss.

Fake crash-and-surgery story led an 82-year-old woman to hand over about €130,000

What happened: Police in Brașov investigated an accident-method fraud against an 82-year-old woman. The callers claimed her son had caused a serious road accident and that a victim needed urgent surgery abroad, requiring a payment. Kept under that false emergency story, she handed about €130,000 to a man. Police identified four men from Constanța county, searched homes, seized suspected proceeds and detained the suspects for 24 hours.
